Troop 17
2007-2008 Activities

Junior Activity – Eco Action Badge
Today we met with a Junior troop and completed most of the activities for the Eco Action Badge in preparation for Bridging. We created recycling posters and boxes, planted a tree, and learned how to live responsibly in our environment. The troop invited us to return next year to see how our tree is growing. We have one more activity to complete to earn this badge.

Father Daughter Dinner & Court of Awards
Our annual Father Daughter Dinner was outstanding. All the girls looked beautiful and enjoyed a home cooked dinner with their Dads. The evening ended with our Court of Awards.

Keep Loudoun Beautiful
Our current service project was to spend time cleaning up around Evergreen Mill Elementary School. It was amazing how much trash we picked up around the school grounds.

Service Project - Loudoun Interfaith Relief
During the Cookie Sale, we collected over 90 boxes of cookies that we donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief. We also held a food drive before we delivered the cookies, so that we were helping to fill the needs of the food pantry and help serve our community. We collected over 300 pounds of food. We made a poster about the food drive and sent it in to the Girl Scout Council to show how we Dare to Share by Taking Action.

Plants, Plants, Plants
Learning about plants was quite interesting. We tried to watch the plant growth of lima beans and also planted six types of flowers to see which ones would grow the fastest. It turned out that only a few of the lima beans grew, and most became moldy. Some of us are having luck growing flowers, although they are all very small. We’ll still have to wait and see. Through our mold experiment we grew red, yellow, black, and green mold. Most of us had to throw this one out before spring break.

Zinc the Zebra
Today we read a book titled “Zinc the Zebra,” a story written by a little girl who wanted to show that even though our appearances may be different from others, we are all very similar on the inside. The girls then wrote their own story and shared with the group. Each of the girls also wrote a nice letter to one of the other girls in the troop telling her how special she is.

Thinking Day
The girls participated in a parade and then rotated to 16 different stations where they learned about different countries, completed arts and crafts activities, and tasted dishes that the other troops made. Everyone had a good time.

Making Soda Bread
Another activity that we needed to prepare for Thinking Day was making a traditional dish of Ireland. We chose Irish Soda Bread. Hannah H., Hannah Y., Jamie, and Allison did a great job making 5 loaves of delicious Soda Bread. We hope you all enjoyed it.

Thinking Day Preparation
Today we prepared for our Thinking Day celebration. We split into two groups. One group created a mural with information and pictures of Ireland. The other group created the poster that will be carried in the parade. We also spent time making SWAPS for Thinking Day.

Learning to Sew
In January we took a field trip to the Loudoun Museum where we learned to sew and cross stitch. We made a heart-shaped bean bag and started a cross stitch of our initials. We completed the Stitch-It Together Try-It.

Cookie Kick-Off Meeting
In December we met with Troop 4738 to discover the new cookies we would be selling, learn and practice how to set goals, make change, and sell cookies. We also showed the younger girls how to present the cookies to customers.

Service Project
We took a trip to Hancock Fabric where we purchased fleece to make blankets for the children at the women and children’s shelter in Leesburg. We made the blankets at home. In December, we took a trip to the shelter where we helped the families decorate their Christmas tree, had a small party, and delivered the wrapped blankets to the children.

Walking Historic Leesburg
We learned about the history of Halloween and took a walking tour of Leesburg where we were told stories of ghosts that live in some of the buildings.

Decorating Store Windows
In October we painted the windows at Safeway with ghosts and goblins.

Science Wonders Try-It
We made an ooey-gooey concoction, blew up balloons with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, separated ink, and talked about magnets.

Pizza Party
We started off the year with a pizza party where we played games and had our rededication ceremony.
